How to clean sneakers: leather, suede and mesh need different care

Choose a cleaning method by the actual upper material, understand when to avoid the washing machine, and check care information before buying another pair.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Identify every material on the shoe before adding water or cleaner. Suede calls for a different starting method from smooth leather or mesh. Follow the instructions for the exact pair, test a compatible cleaner discreetly, and allow the shoes to dry as directed before wearing them.

Start with the material, rather than the colour

A search for cleaning white sneakers can lead to instructions for several very different surfaces. Nike separates leather, suede and knit care in its cleaning guidance. A method described for one material should not become a treatment for every white panel on a shoe.

Read the material description and inspect the care information for your exact model. Make a simple note of the toe, side panels, tongue and trim. If a listing only says “premium upper”, ask what those parts are made from before choosing a cleaning product.

For a mixed-material shoe, plan how to keep a treatment on the intended panel. If you cannot identify the material or avoid neighbouring delicate areas, resolve that uncertainty with the maker or a footwear-care specialist first.

Smooth leather: check the finish and test the cleaner

New Balance recommends a cleaner intended for leather or suede when those materials are involved, and advises testing detergent on an inconspicuous area. That is a useful reason to pause before treating a whole leather upper with a household cleaning recipe.

The adidas cleaning demonstration uses a leather-upper Superstar and distinguishes tools for the upper from tools for the outsole. It also recommends working gently on the upper. Its example does not establish that every leather finish, painted detail or attached decoration can tolerate the same treatment.

Read the cleaner’s compatibility instructions as well as the shoe’s care guidance. Keep a note of what you tested and where. If colour transfers or the finish changes, stop; a larger application will not answer whether the product is suitable.

Suede: let moisture dry before the first brushing

Nike’s suede guidance starts with dry material: allow mud or moisture to dry, then gently remove loose dirt with a suitable brush. It describes a suede eraser for remaining surface marks and warns against putting suede shoes through a washing machine or washing them in soap and water.

This is why a wet wipe is not an automatic first step for a suede toe panel. Separate loose surface dirt from a persistent stain. A stain that remains after gentle dry treatment is a different problem, rather than a signal to keep scrubbing harder.

For further treatment, check a suede-specific product against the exact material and finish. Do not combine several internet stain recipes in succession. If the stain or material is uncertain, asking for specialist advice is more useful than promising that one ingredient will restore every pair.

Mesh and knit: gentle surface cleaning needs patience

Nike recommends gentle brushing for knit shoes and cautions against rubbing the fabric when removing moisture. Its general cleaning process uses a soft cloth to blot away moisture and dirt, followed by air drying at room temperature.

Work in small areas so you can see the effect of the treatment. Check separately for overlays, trim and decorative parts: a mesh main panel does not identify the materials used around it. Do not use a sole-cleaning brush on the upper merely because both areas are dirty.

Keep the cleaning plan specific. Record the approved product, application method and drying instruction for that pair. A tutorial for an all-textile shoe leaves an unanswered question when your sneaker also has suede overlays.

Can sneakers go in the washing machine or dryer?

New Balance advises against putting its shoes in a washing machine or dryer because many materials should not be submerged or exposed to heat. Treat that as the brand’s care guidance, rather than assuming every sneaker is washable because it has a fabric upper.

The table below is a way to organise checks, not a universal cleaning recipe. The product-specific instruction takes priority when a particular model has different requirements.

Check maintenance needs while comparing shoe listings

The adidas guide treats drying as part of cleaning and advises air drying away from direct sunlight. Plan the drying time before starting, rather than cleaning the only pair you need immediately before leaving home.

When browsing the Wheebuy Spreadsheet shoe category, add material and care availability to your comparison notes. Product photographs help you examine appearance, but they do not certify a material or prove that a cleaner is compatible. Ask for missing material details and care instructions on the order page.

Choose with the upkeep in mind. If you want a pair for frequent messy conditions, decide whether you are willing to follow the listed maintenance routine. A useful shortlist records that practical requirement alongside the size and reference price.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean suede sneakers with soap and water?

Nike advises against this approach for suede. Begin with its dry-care guidance and check a suede-specific treatment for the exact material before dealing with a persistent stain.

Does a mesh upper mean sneakers are machine washable?

No. The complete shoe and its care instructions matter. New Balance, for example, advises against machine washing its footwear; a mesh panel does not override that instruction.

Can QC photos tell me which cleaner to use?

They can help you inspect visible surfaces, but cannot establish material composition or cleaning compatibility. Obtain the material description and product-specific care guidance separately.
